Claverdon RFC Edge Out Harborne RFC in Tense Clash
Claverdon RFC battled their way to a hard-fought 24-17 victory over Harborne in a nail-biting encounter that saw the visitors' forward power and clinical finishing ultimately prove the difference.
The match began as a tense, cagey affair, with neither side able to gain a significant advantage in the opening 15 minutes. However, it was Claverdon who began to assert their dominance, particularly in the forward pack, laying the groundwork for their first breakthrough. After several attempts, a well-executed lineout finally paid dividends when Will Thorneywork showcased some impressive footwork to beat two defenders near the line and touch down.
Harborne, however, were quick to respond, capitalizing on some lapse Claverdon defending. A converted try saw them take a narrow 7-5 lead, catching the Claverdon side off guard. But the visitors were determined to regain control. They repeatedly knocked on the door before Steve Grimsley dotted down, with Luke Sibley's conversion restoring Claverdon's lead at 12-7. Just before the half-time whistle, Dan Hadley powered his way over the line, extending Claverdon's lead to 17-7 at the break.
While Claverdon finished the first half on a high, the second half began with a string of penalties against them. They were fortunate to avoid a yellow card, and Harborne capitalized on the infringements, slotting a penalty to close the gap to 17-10.
However, Claverdon's responded quickly. A well-worked first-phase attack saw James Gibney go close before debutant George Evans delivered a quick pass to Sibley, who finished in the corner. Sibley then coolly slotted the conversion from out wide, stretching the lead to 24-10.
Despite Claverdon's impressive defence, their continued penalty count made the final stages of the match more difficult than necessary. Harborne's sustained pressure eventually paid off with a late try, but it wasn't enough to overturn Claverdon's lead.
The final whistle confirmed a 24-17 victory for Claverdon. Claverdon's next game is away at Southam on 13th September.
