Claverdon RFC

38 - 22

(HT 0-0)

St Neots RUFC

Claverdon hosted Cambridge-side St Neots in the Papa John’s Cup in what was an exciting quarter final match.

The Lions started strong with a breakaway from centre, Will Jackson. Hunted down just before the line, the forwards recycled, allowing James Williams to take the ball into a driving maul over the line. St Neots responded well and muted the crowd quickly with a try of their own.

However, Claverdon’s strong line out allowed for a tactical territory game to ensue, led by Williams and Jackson. A 50-metre try from Tom Bicknell, the highlight of the game, was a sight to behold. While the Claverdon defence struggled in parts, the red and white held firm and avoided any upsets. A hattrick from Jordan Edwards provided a necessary boost to the game, despite St Neots’ best efforts to close the points deficit.

Following a St Neots yellow card, Claverdon were able to capitalise on the extra player. James Kirby drove over the line to cement the victory following relentless bombardment on the visitors line.

The match ended 38-22 in favour of Claverdon, and they now proceed to the semi-finals against Belper on Saturday.
